Duplicate Title Tags

Multiple pages with identical titles compete with each other in search. Here's how to deduplicate.

What it means

Two or more pages on your site have the exact same <title> tag. Often happens with templated pages, archive pages, or pagination.

Why it matters

Google can't tell which page to rank for a given query — they compete with each other and both rank lower than either could alone.

How to fix it

  1. List flagged URLs grouped by duplicate title.
  2. Write a unique title for each, varying the keyword or qualifier.
  3. On paginated archives, append "— Page 2" etc.
  4. Add canonical tags to deliberate duplicates.
