Just launched or very few backlinks. Focus on creating linkable assets and earning your first 50 referring domains.
20–40
Growing
Real progress. You can start ranking for long-tail keywords (KD < 30) but page-1 for competitive terms is still 12+ months out.
40–60
Solid
Most established small-to-medium sites live here. Competitive for medium-difficulty keywords (KD 30–50).
60–80
Strong
Mid-market authority. Can rank for high-volume head terms with strong content. Examples: most SaaS company sites.
80–100
Top-tier
Wikipedia, NYTimes, Amazon. Outranks almost everyone by default; competing requires extraordinary content + links.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Domain Authority?

Domain Authority (DA) — also called Authority Score or Domain Rating depending on provider — is a 0-to-100 score predicting how well a website will rank in Google search results. It's based primarily on the quantity and quality of backlinks. A new site starts at 0–10; established sites sit at 30–60; Wikipedia, Amazon, and NYTimes are 90+.

Is DA used by Google?

Not directly. DA is a third-party model (originally Moz, now replicated by Semrush, Ahrefs, and others) that approximates Google's internal PageRank, which Google no longer publishes publicly. Google uses many proprietary authority signals; DA correlates with them at roughly 0.7, which is why SEO professionals still rely on it.

How is DA different from PA?

Domain Authority (DA) measures the whole website. Page Authority (PA) measures a single URL. A high-DA site like nytimes.com will have varying PA per page: the homepage near 90, a 2019 obscure article maybe 25. When you're trying to outrank a specific page, PA matters more than DA.

How do I increase my DA score?

Earn backlinks from high-DA sites in your niche. Two backlinks from DA-70 sites move your score more than fifty from DA-10 sites. Methods that work: original research, free tools, expert guest posts, podcast appearances. Methods that hurt: PBNs, paid link networks, comment spam — Google can detect these and may penalize your domain.

What DA do I need to rank?

Look at the top 10 sites currently ranking for your target keyword and average their DA. You generally need to be within 15–20 points to compete on content quality alone. If they average DA 70 and you're DA 10, no on-page optimization will help — focus on link building first.
